Dr Mats tip of the day - 038 - Preparing HR for Disruption

As I have tabled previously, the new future filled with regular and ongoing Disruption will change many of the ways organizations operate and are organized. Fair to say Disruption and AI will cause great changes that are sudden, may lead to significant job losses as new ways are adopted or as AI/robots proliferate from the new technology.

In this fast paced Disruptive world your staff will likely be threatened by these changes, or confused as to why and what is happening. Staff may lose confidence with the leadership if they are no longer informed and close to the decision making. sure the changes may have to go through in order to be competitive - but it would be a great loss if your best and most mobile staff left before you explain that you want them to stay, before you let them know there is a place for them post Disruption.

Your HR department should be informed itself of the impending change - they should be researching the topics, working through strategy and defining the skills required for this new age. HR is surely more than merely IR or pay rises and a review process ! This is a time where your HR can really be involved in your strategic direction, one that can assist in attracting and retaining the skills that you need for the future (see my book for more on those skills) - the HR department could be more important now than ever, if your organization recognises the threats and opportunities in Disruption, AI/robots - it may be prudent to start your HR disruption gap analysis now and lead that into concrete rational and useful strategies to prepare your staff for the future.

Omitting or ignoring this impending Disruption threat may leave your organization open to threats and risks - you may lose the good staff, be left with staff without the necessary skills or find hiring new staff with skills exceedingly difficult !

In Disruption the iterations of strategy reviews will need to occur more often, changes in direction may also occur more frequently - building a strategy review process is now more important than ever.

If you are a Leader or seeking to be one in the future - you need to read, read, read about Disruption NOW ! Those that fail to understand and adjust will fall behind.
